GCA Exhibition - Fran Attaway
Fran Attaway was born in New York to a mother who was a painter and an architect/painter father. Having such artistic influence impacting on her on a daily basis, it's no wonder Fran started dabbling in paints at and early age. Later, she studied at the Art Student's League in New York and also privately in Paris and Tokyo.
After traveling extensively throughout the USA, Europe and the Far East most of her life, Fran and her husband came to Barbados for a vacation in 1995 and stayed for the next 12 years.
She is now retired and resides in Barbados where she paints full time.
Her paintings show influences of many of the places to which she traveled.

Oistins Fish Fry
Oistins is an active fishing town on the south coast and is a hub of activity on weekend nights. On Friday night particularly, the big thing to do is go to the fish fry in Oistins. The food is the main draw - excellent fish, (tuna, swordfish, marlin, mahy-mahy, flying fish), lobster, chicken etc served in an extremely informal setting. You can get your fish grilled or fried depending on which vendor you choose from. Its all cooked on the spot in front of you. A plate of fish (and theres plenty fish on it) and a beer will cost you about Bds$30.00. Seating is plentiful, if rustic, and in amongst the diners, the old-timers are playing dominoes. But there are also art and craft items on sale, including jewellery, pottery, ceramics, leather craft, wood carvings, straw craft, clothing and accessories, and original paintings and prints. There are two sources of music one plays mostly back-in-time (Bob Marley, Platters, Jimmy Cliff, Jamaican ska, even old country and western!), the other calypso, including the current Crop Over hits. You can dance if you want or watch the others dance! Some nights theres a live band. Food is usually available from about 7:00 pm but if you go early (say 5:45 pm) you can walk on the pier and perhaps see a great sunset. Collect your fish scraps from the vendors in the fish market and feed the turtles. Frequented by visitors and locals alike, it's a great place to spend an informal evening. Lots of parents bring their children. If you go after 8:00, be prepared occasionally for long waits for food. Dress down!

After you have bought your vegetables and ground provisions (or even before) go to the coffee stand for your latte and cappuccino and have it with fish cakes, quiche or other tasty breakfast items.
Also available is freshly baked bread.
Sit at the tables under the trees and have your eats and drinks. Let you little ones loose to wander over the lawn or have fun in the small playground.
A pleasant way to do your fresh produce marketing and to start your weekend off in a relaxed mood.

OPG Exhibition - London Calling
London Calling is an exibition and sale of works by William Cookson and Harry Grenfell at the Old Pharmacy Gallery, Speightstown.
These two have been artists in residence at the Lancaster Great House since December 2009.Exhibition times:Mon and Tues: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.Wed to Sat: 10:0 am to 10:00 pm.
William Cookson is a classically trained abstract artist. William trained in both London and Italy, spending three years developing his style and collaborating with other artists in Florence to stretch his artistic vision. He moved from Italy to Mexico to seek further artistic stimulation and observe a kaleidoscope of cultures in an organic, informal setting. The vibrant contrast of his external environments enhanced his desire to experiment further with colour and technique and formed the basis of his urban abstract art collection which he continues to develop. William has exhibited in various spaces both locally and internationally and produced a number of commissions for private clients.
No bio is available on Harry Grenfell.

Museum Lecture Series 2010 - Emigration from Barbados - Lecture 1
This is the first of ten lectures in the 2010 series sponsored by the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, in conjunction with the Department of History at the UWI.
The lectures seek to heighten public awareness and to inform opinion on significant events in the history of Barbados.
The series is one of the highlights of the annual museum calendar with lectures being given by highly qualified historians and other academics.
The title of this year series is 'Emigration from Barbados'.
At a time when local social services, jobs and other amenities are under pressure from significant inward migration, it is perhaps wise to reflect on those times in our not too-distant past when Barbadians benefited from outward migration.
This week's lecture will be given by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Chancellor of the Cave Hill Campus of University of the West Indies.
The title of the lecture is not yet available.
Museum publications, including the latest edition (2009) of the highly respected Museum Journal, will be on sale.

Carmen and Gregory Directed by Linda Atkinson and Nck DoobThis beautiful feature documentary is about the work of two exceptional artists, Carmen de Lavallade and Geoffrey Holder, who stepped forward in the 1950’s to play a vital part in the newly energized world of American modern dance. It is also about a fifty-four year long love affair and the creative partnership that sustained their accomplishments
The Solitary Alchemist Directed by Mariel BrownWhat happens when talent isn’t enough? When, in spite of a life of work, you look around in the autumn of your life and discover that your world is not what you thought it would be. This is where we meet Trinidadian jeweller, Barbie Jardine.Trained at England’s prestigious Royal College of Art, Jardine moved back to her native Trinidad in 1974 where she developed new techniques in working with traditional and indigenous materials, and evolved a personal narrative style for making wearable works of art. But 30 years on from returning to the Caribbean, and in spite of having her work purchased by a major metropolitan museum, there are nagging questions she just can’t shake: Why isn’t my work more recognised? Have I made a crucial mistake? She is resentful and angry. And she wants something more. An opportunity to create a new piece for an exhibition in Scotland presents itself and Barbie is both nervous and hopeful.
Museum Lecture Series 2010 - Emigration from Barbados - Lecture 3
This is the third of ten lectures in the 2010 series sponsored by the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, in conjunction with the Department of History at the UWI.
This week's lecture will be given by Dr. Karl Watson, Senior Lecturer at the UWI Cave Hill Campus, and currently the Chairman of the Barbados National Trust, and is titled "Extending Plantation".
Museum publications, including the latest edition (2009) of the highly respected Museum Journal, will be on sale.

Dress down!

Brighton Farmer's Market
This is a favourite meeting place of locals, expatriates and tourists alike.
Set in the picturesque grounds of Brighton Plantation, it is a farm gate produce market coupled with sales of prepared food, clothing, and local craft.

Museum Lecture Series 2010 - Emigration from Barbados - Lecture 8
This is the eighth of ten lectures in the 2010 series sponsored by the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, in conjunction with the Department of History at the UWI.
This week's lecture will be given by Dr. Marcia Burrowes, and is titled "Windrush".
Museum publications, including the latest edition (2009) of the highly respected Museum Journal, will be on sale.

UWI Cave Hill Film Society: 'A Touch of Spice'
This movie is part of the 2009/10 season of film sponsored by the UWI Cave Hill Film Society. The UWICHFS carefully selects the films it presents for their directorial and cinematographic value. They are often foreign films with English sub-titles. There is usually a discussion about the film afterward.A touch of Spice ("Politiki Kousina", by Tassos Boulmetis, Greece, 2006) is a story about a young Greek boy (Fanis) growing up in Istanbul, whose grandfather, a culinary philosopher and mentor, teaches him that both food and life require a little salt to give them flavor; they both require... A Touch of Spice.
Fanis grows up to become an excellent cook and uses his cooking skills to spice up the lives of those around him. 35 years later he leaves Athens and travels back to his birthplace of Istanbul to reunite with his grandfather and his first love; he travels back only to realize that he forgot to put a little bit of spice in his own life
