Carmen and Gregory Directed by Linda Atkinson and Nck Doob;This beautiful feature documentary is about the work of two exceptional artists, Carmen de Lavallade and Geoffrey Holder, who stepped forward in the 1950’s to play a vital part in the newly energized world of American modern dance. It is also about a fifty-four year long love affair and the creative partnership that sustained their accomplishments;;
The Solitary Alchemist Directed by Mariel Brown; What happens when talent isn’t enough? When, in spite of a life of work, you look around in the autumn of your life and discover that your world is not what you thought it would be. This is where we meet Trinidadian jeweller, Barbie Jardine.;Trained at England’s prestigious Royal College of Art, Jardine moved back to her native Trinidad in 1974 where she developed new techniques in working with traditional and indigenous materials, and evolved a personal narrative style for making wearable works of art. ;But 30 years on from returning to the Caribbean, and in spite of having her work purchased by a major metropolitan museum, there are nagging questions she just can’t shake: Why isn’t my work more recognised? Have I made a crucial mistake? She is resentful and angry. And she wants something more. An opportunity to create a new piece for an exhibition in Scotland presents itself and Barbie is both nervous and hopeful. Will this be the chance to finally carve out her own space in the world?;;Calypso Dreams Directed by Geoffrey Dunn; The feature-length documentary film Calypso Dreams chronicles the fascinating spirit and traditions of Calypso music in the island country of Trinidad and Tobago, dating back to its complex Afro-Caribbean roots in the 18th and 19th centuries.;With narrative commentary by the popular Caribbean musician David Rudder, the film captures riveting, contemporary performances by a host of legendary Calypso performers with colorful “sobriquets,” including the Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Rose, Lord Superior, Black Stalin, Mighty Bomber, Lord Blakie, Singing Sandra and Mighty Terror, and pays homage to recently deceased Calypsonians, including Lord Kitchener and Lord Pretender.;;Tribes Directed by Ras Kassa;Set in Trinidad and Tobago (An estimated fourteen thousand (14,000) people in Trinidad and Tobago are living with HIV/AIDS), Tribes takes viewers on a rollercoaster of love, life and lessons learned. Written by Jamaican Ed Wallace, the story centred around Jamahl, an undefeated stick-fighter and popular radio DJ, he finds that an unexpected twist in his personal life threatens to destroy everything. With support from his best friend and family, Jamahl realizes it’s not how hard you fall, but how you get up that counts. ;;Africa Unite Directed by Stephanie Black;AFRICA UNITE is a singular and masterfully executed film by Stephanie Black that is at once concert tribute, Marley family travelogue, and humanitarian documentary, igniting the screen with the spirit of world-renowned reggae icon BOB MARLEY in its every frame. In commemoration of Bobs 60th birthday, Africa Unite is centered on the Marley’s first-time-ever family trip to Ethiopia in 2005. Includes rare footage of the legendary reggae icon Bob Marley.;;Rain Directed by Maria Govan;Director Maria Govan’s powerful debut, one of the first films produced indigenously in the Bahamas, shows a darker side of the country that tourists rarely see. A teenager named Rain has lived her entire life with her grandmother on a tiny rural island in the Bahamas. When her grandmother dies, Rain goes to Nassau to find her mother, Glory, whom she has never met.;;A Winter Tale Directed by Frances-Anne Solomon;Shots ring out one winter night and a bullet meant for a local street dealer kills a ten-year-old boy.;In the downtown Toronto community of Parkdale, grief and suspicion hang heavily in the air, while the nightly patrons at Miss G’s Caribbean TakeAway resume their ritual of beer and banter.;But one of them, Gene Wright, cannot go on. He begs his friends for help. In a most unusual development, six Black men make a pact to form a support group in hopes of salvaging their broken spirits and redeeming their besieged community.;A Winter Tale is set against the backdrop of a multicultural community’s unrealized hopes and dreams. Bitter and tragic, funny and hopeful, the film tells a uniquely Canadian story that features Toronto as a central character.;;The Rosa Parks Story Directed by Julie Dash; The film traces the life and history of one of the Civil Rights Movement’s most indelible social activists. This inspiring television film explores the salient moments in Parks’s childhood and adult life that helped shape her philosophy of quiet strength that resulted in her historic moment of peaceful defiance on a segregated bus in 1955.;;Nurse Fighter Boy Directed by Charles Officer;Jude is a single mother descending from a long line of caregivers, who dreams of going back to Zion: St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. Silence is a ‘past his prime’ boxer who fights illegally to survive. Ciel is a boy who delves into music, conjuring dreams for his mother. His prayers for her are fanciful and might be magical. During the last week of summer, a late-night brawl finds the fighter in the nurse’s care, intertwining their fates. The urban love story of Nurse.Fighter.Boy explores archetypal characters of nurturer, warrior, and child with a humanizing respect.

GCA Exhibition - Treasures by Susan Mains
The Gallery of Caribbean Art presents the recent paintings of Susan Mains.
In a word, Susan Mains paints with 'passion'. The resonance of vibrant colour, the broad gestural strokes of the brush or knife and the mystery of the tale she spins in each painting convincingly portray her passionate love for the Caribbean.
Susan Mains was born in the USA but has lived in the Caribbean since 1970. Having lived at various times in Dominica and Barbados, she now makes her home in Grenada.
Susan describes her art as auto-didactic. Strong colours and contrasts characterize her paintings, photography and mixed media.
Over a 22 year span, Susan has exhibited her work in Washington and Miami in the USA, as well as several Caribbean territories including Dominica, Grenada, Barbados and the Dominican Republic.

Museum Lecture Series 2010 - Emigration from Barbados - Lecture 3
This is the third of ten lectures in the 2010 series sponsored by the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, in conjunction with the Department of History at the UWI.
The lectures seek to heighten public awareness and to inform opinion on significant events in the history of Barbados.
The series is one of the highlights of the annual museum calendar with lectures being given by highly qualified historians and other academics.
The title of this year series is 'Emigration from Barbados'.
At a time when local social services, jobs and other amenities are under pressure from significant inward migration, it is perhaps wise to reflect on those times in our not too-distant past when Barbadians benefited from outward migration.
This week's lecture will be given by Dr. Karl Watson, Senior Lecturer at the UWI Cave Hill Campus, and currently the Chairman of the Barbados National Trust, and is titled "Extending Plantation".
Museum publications, including the latest edition (2009) of the highly respected Museum Journal, will be on sale.

Oistins Fish Fry
Oistins is an active fishing town on the south coast and is a hub of activity on weekend nights. ;;On Friday night particularly, the big thing to do is go to the fish fry in Oistins. The food is the main draw - excellent fish, (tuna, swordfish, marlin, mahy-mahy, flying fish), lobster, chicken etc served in an extremely informal setting. You can get your fish grilled or fried depending on which vendor you choose from. Its all cooked on the spot in front of you. ;;A plate of fish (and theres plenty fish on it) and a beer will cost you about Bds$30.00. ;;Seating is plentiful, if rustic, and in amongst the diners, the old-timers are playing dominoes. ;;But there are also art and craft items on sale, including jewellery, pottery, ceramics, leather craft, wood carvings, straw craft, clothing and accessories, and original paintings and prints. ;;There are two sources of music one plays mostly back-in-time (Bob Marley, Platters, Jimmy Cliff, Jamaican ska, even old country and western!), the other calypso, including the current Crop Over hits. You can dance if you want or watch the others dance! Some nights theres a live band. ;;Food is usually available from about 7:00 pm but if you go early (say 5:45 pm) you can walk on the pier and perhaps see a great sunset. Collect your fish scraps from the vendors in the fish market and feed the turtles. ;;Frequented by visitors and locals alike, it's a great place to spend an informal evening. Lots of parents bring their children. ;;If you go after 8:00, be prepared occasionally for long waits for food. ;;Dress down!

Museum Lecture Series 2010 - Emigration from Barbados - Lecture 4
This is the fourth of ten lectures in the 2010 series sponsored by the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, in conjunction with the Department of History at the UWI.
Lennox Honeychurch, noted Dominican historian, lecturer and author, and is titled "Maritime Maroonage".
Museum publications, including the latest edition (2009) of the highly respected Museum Journal, will be on sale.

Ocean Spray Movie Night - The Bird People in China

Snacks and drinks always on sale. Doors open at 7:00 and the film starts at 7.30 pm.;;Barbeque menu: ;Grilled Fish, Grilled Chicken, Grilled Potatoes, Macaroni Pie, Cole-Slaw and Tossed Salad.;;;The film for this Friday is The Bird People in China. ;;
Set in Yunnan, China, this fantasy adventure film focuses on two different men from opposite sides of the fence; a mobster and a quiet businessman, who, sent to evaluate precious jade in a remote Chinese village, at the same time discover the rustic beauty of nature and the evils of industry. This 'small story painted on a huge and gorgeous canvas' juxtaposes technology and tradition, nature and development, human suffering and happiness, in a 'dreamy, zen-like way'.
"A lyrically stunning work...explores many of Takashi Miike's unifying themes, including that of outsiders in pursuit of happiness in a foreign land, and that of complex and unlikely relationships. The depth of the characters, the breathtaking scenery, and the slow, dreamlike pacing make this film a magical, poetic experience that is sure to enchant and haunt its audiences " (rottentomatoes.com).

BG Exhibition - BADMANABADMAN by Alberta Whittle
"It's a man's world - Perseus' - Mixed media' by Alberta whittle.;;The exhibition is curated by Therese Hadchity.;;"The installation, badmanabadman refers to living stereotypes of the black male body. ;;Whittle mines images of bodybuilders, minstrelsy, religious iconography, hip-hop legends, historical figures and popular culture, to produce assemblages, which attempt to subvert gender and racial stereotypes. ;;Whittle struggles to formulate a kind of hybrid collage strategy, through the acquisition of bits and pieces of visual information, striving to make sense of them. Her assemblages become a deliberate pastiche of glamour, through the manipulation of decorative excess. ;;Through inverting the disposable, she hopes to make something precious. Artifice becomes a device to create myths, where the illusion of preciousness and luxury is manufactured with cheap, accessible materials, such as felt, styrofoam, mirrors and fake gems."

At a time when local social services, jobs and other amenities are under pressure from significant inward migration, it is perhaps wise to reflect on those times in our not too-distant past when Barbadians benefited from outward migration.

BG Exhibition - BADMANABADMAN by Alberta Whittle
"It's a man's world - Perseus' - Mixed media' by Alberta whittle.;;The exhibition is curated by Therese Hadchity.
"The installation, badmanabadman refers to living stereotypes of the black male body. ;;Whittle mines images of bodybuilders, minstrelsy, religious iconography, hip-hop legends, historical figures and popular culture, to produce assemblages, which attempt to subvert gender and racial stereotypes. ;;Whittle struggles to formulate a kind of hybrid collage strategy, through the acquisition of bits and pieces of visual information, striving to make sense of them. Her assemblages become a deliberate pastiche of glamour, through the manipulation of decorative excess. ;;Through inverting the disposable, she hopes to make something precious. Artifice becomes a device to create myths, where the illusion of preciousness and luxury is manufactured with cheap, accessible materials, such as felt, styrofoam, mirrors and fake gems.";;Exhibition times are:;Tue/Thu/Fri: 11:00 am to 4:00 pm;Wed: 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm;Sat/Sun by appt.

Gale Theatre - The Memory of Water
The Memory of Water is a an Olivier award-winning comedy written by the very talented Shelagh Stephenson. Shelagh has been described by the UK Guardian as a 'mistress of comic anguish'.;;The play is directed by Thom Cross, who brought Echo in the Bone, Equus, Vagina Monologues and The Final Truth to the Barbados stage to critical acclaim, and is produced by Melissa Simmonds, who gave you Macbeth and Blithe Spirit, in association with long time partner Virgin Atlantic.;;The narrative is simple.;Three dysfunctional sisters assemble at the family home for the funeral of their mother. They share memories from versions of their past that are both conscious and unconscious forms of memory. But at the heart of the plot are the healing qualities that memory brings in the face of personal trauma or tragedy. Indeed memory is the enemy of death in the play, as it brings humour and laughter to the ‘wake’ ritual, which defeats death by reminding us of the life of the deceased.;;Lead by award-winning English actress Suzan Sylvester, who plays Teresa the eldest sister, the cast includes Endy McKay as Mary - the doctor sister, and Nailah Cumberbatch, a Barbadian living in London who plays the youngest prodigal sister. Their mother, Vi, appears to Mary and is played by Barbadian resident Caroline Gardiner.;;The men in the lives of the sisters are Mike - a married TV doctor, who is the boyfriend of Mary, played by well known Calypsonian and actor, Anderson Armstrong - and the unhappy Frank - Teresa’s man (second time round) played by Barbadian actor, Drew McKenzie. ;;The performance schedule is as follows:;April 10, 11, 16 17 - 8:00 pm;April 15 - 2:00 pm;April 16 - 2:00 pm (schools only);;Admission is: ;Bds $50.00 on Gala Night April 10;Bds $40.00 all other nights;;Tickets will be on sale from Supercentre Warrens, Big B, and Oistins, and from CS Pharmacy, starting March 14th.

Museum Lecture Series 2010 - Emigration from Barbados - Lecture 10
This is the last of ten lectures in the 2010 series sponsored by the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, in conjunction with the Department of History at the UWI.
DeLisle Worrell, noted economist and current Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados and is titled "Migration and the Barbadian Standard of Living".
Museum publications, including the latest edition (2009) of the highly respected Museum Journal, will be on sale.

GCA Exhibition - Nakazzi Hutchinson
Barbadian/Jamaican Nakazzi, considers herself primarily a sculptor but her practice of art varies widely to include charcoal drawings, paintings, batik's, murals and mosaics, and ceramics.
She is perhaps best known for her ceramic masks, which she hand paints and adorns with natural found materials to depict various popular Caribbean hairstyles. In doing so she seeks to represent a uniquely Afro-Caribbean aesthetic and identity
But her work extends much, much further than that as a visit to her website at www.nakazzi.com will show.
